Well, after 7 years in America the US government has finally decided to 'remove the "conditions" on my greencard' and thereby allowing me to apply for my US citizenship as soon as Feb-07.

So, now the question becomes, should I be a citizen of India, a citizen of US or both?

The Consulate General of India is pretty vague about the whole dual citizenship issue... so I dont know if I want to go thru the hassle of doing that yet as I can always do the 'dual' thing later on 'after' I am a US citizen... but what are the real benefits of being a US citizen?

You get to vote!
I think the most useful thing is that you don't need a visa for a lot of countries if you have a US passport.

well its good to be a citizen of the place where you live.
Moreover, you can claim Indian citizenship any time you want, as you have the natural birth right of India. So when you are pushing your 80s or 90s and think you want stay in India, you can always move back.

i dont know if "being able to vote" is as convincing for me as being able to apply for all available jobs.

true that i wouldnt need visas to a lot of places, but being a citizen also puts me in the mix for 'the draft', on the list for jury duty etc. i also think that your SS payments would stop if u went to India at some point.

my suggestion is that yu get US citizenship and then apply for the India citizenship (Dual citizenship). This way if you decide to stay in US, you get all the benefits and if you decide to move to India, it wouldn't be a problem.

Dude the voting this is a major plus because people who vote can make sure that idiots like Bush do not become president. Although I should not say anything because i did not vote in the last election.

hehehe

Pros for being a citizen:
-you can vote
-you can apply for more jobs (especially in your field this is a big plus)
-you can stand in the US Citizen line when u come back from India
-you never have to renew citizenship like you do with Greencard
-you get a new passport
-don't need visas for lot of other countries

anyone know of anyone else who has recently done the 'dual' citizenship thing?

with being a citizen you also are in the line of getting head cut off by the terrorist if they hijack your plane first compared to non citizen. Just a thought just a thought. ;-)

Really who cares about voting and yes you do get SS if you plan to go to india, just make sure u deposit in the account here.

other benefits include

travelling to other countries like mentioned before, no renewals, etc etc as mentioned about.

I dont think you have problem applying for jobs if u are citizen or a resident alien.

Also when i got my citizenship i asked the lady who took my interview last year about dual citizenship and she said USA does not recognize Dual citizenship with any other countries. so basically u get a green card of the other country if u apply to dual citizenship

I enjoyed my Jury Duty time. I don't consider that as a negative. Being selected for the draft, I guess I never really thought about that. As for terrorists killing you first because you are a citizen it will only happen if you are at the US embassy in some other country. Because they won't be able to tell. It's not like its tattooed on you!

i am in the process of filling out the paperwork for dual citizenship.
