yesterday at the local deli, where i get my lunch, an elderly woman, probably in her mid-70s, bought a $100 worth of scratch lottery tickets… and she does that every week! i don’t think she has ever won anything big cos if she had i don’t think she’d be spending her time scratching more lottery tickets. i have seen her at the deli for almost all 5 years that i've been a regular there. now, that to me is a lot of money spent on something as uncertain as lottery tickets, especially for someone her age… odd people like that don’t make sense to me, and the weird thing is that she is probably not the only one.
what would u do if u won a big lottery or a jackpot? do u really buy lottery tickets or gamble at the casino cos u 'need' to 'win' or cos u 'want' the money? when does the need for a decent living turn into a want for ‘better’ living?
these are probably tough questions with multiple answers but i still seem to be probing in the dark... survival of the 'richest' seems to be the new belief these days, and 9 out of 10 people (young and old) think that they can live better only if they had a bigger bank balance.
that may be true to some extent but one has better chances of getting into a car accident, plane crash, or being struck my lightning, than to win a lottery (where the odds of winning a jackpot are around 1 in 200 million) and yet 33% of people in the america think winning the lottery is the only way to financially secure their lives.
strange how money matters to different people in different ways and yet we all go through the same exact cycle of life and death…
Winning BIG is certainly life changing. But chances are you or me or anyone that we know are never going to win.
1 in 350 million that something that people likes to ignore while sracthing tickets.
Anyway you should only play for fun and only waste that much that at the end of the day its just small change ouot of your pocket.

I thought I was on the wrong blog since you had a new post. What I think is odd is how you guys can play teri for hours and hours. At least this lady has some hope of getting money in return, not that I would spend $100 a week on the lottery.

well i agree with disha and jay both. obviously first with disha i thouhgt i was on the wrong blog too since it had a new topic and also terri is played for time pass and not money. n jay is right casue most likely all husbands are bound to spend some money on make up for their wives after all the wives had a nice little chat about it with each other the previous day
coming to these lady. obviously she hasnt won anything big in 5 yrs. second u r forgetting she not wasting her money she is wasting our money, our social security , our health care , pension that she gets. so basically we are paying for everything that she gets now that we wont get when we want to scratch tickets.
most people think lottery will change their fortunes and most are right lottery not scratch though are making some many peopl millionaire with the mega millions, powerball etc etc.

I bet this lady did win something at one time. Now she is thinking that she can win it again, but next time hoping it will be bigger. If she wasn't winning anything then I'm sure she would stop especially after 5 years.

No deepa, I don't think she ever won anything. She is just playing and doesn't care how much she is lost. These people are hopeless.

thank you for all your comments... i dont know how long this lady has been buying scratch tickets, could be more than 5 yrs, could be her entire adult life... my point was just that, whats the logic behind spending money on something uncertain?
tulan: 'many' people are NOT becoming millionaires, only some rare lucky ones are... the reason why lottery jackpots go up in value is cos so many more ppl buy tickets when the jackpot increases and its a never ending cycle until someone wins!
i buy lottery tickets once in a while, i also gamble at the casino once in a while... but i dont 'expect' to win anything, i just do that for fun... plus, you dont win if u dont play! :)

Premal isn't this great how people (tulan) assume what you want to say and start commenting on that subject. But either way looks like a good topic.

like i said "some many" means not many but regularly in span of weeks or month someone is becoming a millionaire as a resulf of winning lottery
